Sway bar rate for handling balance

  • Rate at the endlink scales with d⁴ — a few millimeters of diameter can transform roll stiffness.
  • Longer arms (R) soften the bar; longer torsion spans (L) also lower rate for the same diameter.
  • Hollow bars use OD⁴ − ID⁴ — same OD as a solid bar is softer, or lighter for a given target rate.

Defaults start from a solid ~25 mm bar with a 40″ torsion length and 10″ arms — typical ballpark for passenger-car front bars. Preset chips jump to 22 / 25 / 28 / 32 mm. Enable compare mode to hold chassis mounts (L and R) fixed while you change diameter or switch solid vs hollow.

Results show lb/in and N/mm (≈ 0.1751 N/mm per lb/in). Percent change between stock and upgrade is the quick read for “how much stiffer is this bar?” Pair with wheel offset and tire pressure tools when you are balancing grip, ride height, and chassis feel together.

How to use the sway bar rate calculator

  1. Set length unit and bar geometry. Choose inches or millimeters, then enter bar diameter, effective torsion length L, and arm length R. Use solid or hollow with an inner diameter when needed.
