Horsepower to kW (and PS) for engine claims

• 1 mechanical hp ≈ 0.746 kW; 1 metric PS ≈ 0.735 kW — they are close, not identical.
• US dyno sheets often say hp; European sheets prefer kW or PS.
• Use one system when comparing two engines side by side.

Marketing pages mix horsepower, kilowatts, and metric horsepower (PS/CV). A “400 hp” US claim and a “400 PS” EU claim are not the same power. This converter keeps mechanical hp, bhp, kW, and PS distinct so you can reconcile dyno overlays and brochure numbers.

Enter crank or wheel power as published, pick the source unit, and read the rest of the board. Pair it with the torque converter when you also need N·m ↔ lb·ft from the same sheet.

Remember drivetrain loss: converting units does not turn wheel horsepower into crank horsepower.

How to convert engine power units

1. Enter the published power figure. Use crank or wheel power exactly as the sheet states.
2. Select hp, kW, or PS. Match the source unit first, then read the converted result.
3. Compare engines in one unit system. Convert every claim to kW or hp before you declare a winner.
